Molnupiravir was recognised as one of the best drugs that help in fighting coronavirus. However, at the same time, on social networks, there were rumours that it was just a well-known antiparasitic drug Ivermectin in a new package.

But that’s not so. The same company indeed manufactures both drugs (Merck), but if Molnupiravir compared to Ivermectin, it is obvious that they are entirely different drugs.

Virologist Stephen Griffin confirmed that Molnupiravir and Ivermectin have:

  • different chemical composition;
  • different mechanisms of action.

The active ingredient of Molnupiravir is a synthetic nucleoside derivative of N4-hydroxycytidine.

The active ingredient of Ivermectin is a mixture of two semi-synthetic derivatives of avermectins biosynthesised by actinomycetes of Streptomyces avermitilis. They are macrocyclic lactones. And you can get the avermectins from bacteria found only in Japan.

From the above, it is clear that Molnupiravir and Ivermectin structures differ fundamentally.

Is Molnupiravir the same as Ivermectin

Originally, Molnupiravir was an experimental drug for the flu, but it turned out that it is also an effective universal antiviral agent after a while. So, it is not surprising that in 2021 the FDA approved this drug for the treatment of Covid-19.

At the same time, Ivermectin studies demonstrated that the drug is ineffective in treating COVID-19. But for many years, it has effectively fought diseases associated with parasites.
